Is the Inca Trail Worth It Compared with the Train

The train and bus reach the same citadel without a permit, on any open day, including February. What the trek adds is everything before the citadel: the ruins you can only reach on foot — Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Wiñay Wayna — and the arrival through the Sun Gate, with the city below you.

When the Inca Trail Is Not Worth It

  1. Your dates are in February. The whole trail is closed; take the train or an alternative route.
  2. June to August and you are booking late. Classic permits go five to six months ahead; the short trail or Salkantay is the realistic plan.
  3. You are travelling alone on a listing priced for pairs. Some treks will not sell to one adult, and a few charge about twice the listing price; check the line under the price.
  4. You only want the citadel. The train and bus get you there for less and without the permit.
  5. Altitude worries you. Day two climbs to 4 215 m; the short trail has no pass at all.

How to Make Four Days Worth the Money

  1. Book five to six months ahead for June to August, or pick May or September, when permits last longer.
  2. Check that it sells to one if you travel alone; the line under the price says so.
  3. Count the porter kilograms. 7 kg carried for you makes day two much easier than 5 kg or none.
  4. Look at the train back. The Vistadome has the panoramic roof; the Expedition is plainer.
  5. Spend two or three days in Cusco first, at about 3 400 m, before the climb to 4 215 m.
